Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about how to use the Nolad Finance workspace. This guide covers the platform itself—Terminal, Edge, Scanner, Markets, Saved Analyses, Trades, Watchlist, Journal and Nolad AI.

Getting started

What is the basic Nolad workflow?
Start with a ticker in Terminal. Nolad evaluates CALL versus PUT direction with the Setup Score, then ranks available option contracts separately with Contract Score. Open the selected contract in Edge for chart, chain, pricing and detailed diagnostics. From there, save the analysis or file the trade.
What is the difference between Setup Score and Contract Score?
Setup Score summarizes directional and market context before a strike, premium, spread, open interest or volume is considered. Contract Score summarizes liquidity characteristics and payoff metrics for a specific option contract. They are intentionally separate.
What do HIGH, MIXED and LOW ALIGNMENT mean?
HIGH ALIGNMENT, MIXED ALIGNMENT and LOW ALIGNMENT describe how closely the visible evidence matches Nolad's analytical checks. They are descriptive research classifications only, not recommendations or trade instructions.
Can I search by company name or ticker?
Yes. Use the ticker search at the top of the workspace. Start typing a ticker or company name, choose a matching symbol, then load it. Exact ticker symbols can also be entered directly.

Terminal

What does Terminal show?
Terminal is the home workspace. It summarizes the active ticker, last price, Setup Score, top Contract Score, highest-scoring contract, expected move, Setup Score checks, macro risk, scanner opportunities, market context and other quick-access information.
How is the highest-scoring contract identified?
Nolad evaluates eligible expirations and strikes and ranks them by Contract Score. The highest-scoring contract is a descriptive ranking output, not a recommendation. The visible diagnostics show the measurements and trade-offs associated with that contract.
What happens when I click the highest-scoring contract?
It opens Edge with that underlying, option side, expiration and contract selected so you can inspect the full setup and contract research.
What is Upcoming Macro Risk?
It highlights scheduled macroeconomic events that may matter before the selected contract expires. Risk is color-coded from low to critical. The score reflects potential event impact—not whether the market will rise or fall.

Edge

What is Edge used for?
Edge is the detailed setup and contract research workspace. It combines the chart, option chain, expected move, break-even, target-return scenarios, Contract Score diagnostics, liquidity and premium quality, fundamentals, earnings context and saved-analysis tools.
What does Find Highest-Scoring Contract do?
It searches eligible expirations and identifies the contract with the highest Contract Score rather than staying locked to the expiration currently selected in Edge. If you manually select a specific expiration afterward, Edge can show the highest-scoring eligible contract for that date. This ranking is analytical output, not a recommendation.
What are the positive-only strategy patterns?
Patterns such as SMA 40 Bounce, Strong Drop Reversal, Uptrend Gap, Lower Gap Uptrend and Strong Floor can add confirmation when detected. If they are absent, they do not create a penalty. PUT-specific patterns are handled in the bearish direction checks.
What is Premium Protection?
Premium Protection summarizes how much of the option premium is intrinsic versus extrinsic value. It helps show how much of the purchase price is immediately supported by intrinsic value.
How do I save an analysis?
Use Save Analysis in Edge. Nolad stores a snapshot of the selected contract and the market/setup context at that moment so it can later be viewed or compared with current conditions.
How do I file a trade directly from Edge?
Choose File Trade. Nolad carries the selected ticker, side, expiration, strike, underlying price and entry premium into the trade form. You can adjust the actual fill price and quantity before saving.

Scanner

What does the Scanner rank?
Scanner searches the configured liquid/watchlist universe for bullish and bearish setups, then organizes relevant contracts for further research. Calls and Puts can be viewed separately.
How do I load a Scanner result?
Click or tap the ticker in the results table. Nolad loads the result into Edge so you can inspect the full setup, contract data and supporting context in one place.
Why might Scanner take several seconds?
A scan can require fresh price, setup, expiration, option-chain and liquidity data across multiple symbols. Nolad displays a loading state while those checks are being completed.
What is the Weekly Earnings Opportunity Scanner?
It ranks liquid earnings events using options liquidity, historical earnings behavior, historical move context, implied-versus-realized movement and pre/post-earnings behavior.

Markets, News, Earnings and Fundamentals

What is available in Markets?
Markets provides quick access to News, Earnings, Fundamentals, the weekly Earnings Radar and Macro Radar for the active ticker or broader market context.
What does the Earnings view show?
It combines upcoming/report information with historical price reaction around prior earnings, EPS history, continuation behavior and post-earnings timing windows.
What does Fundamentals show?
Fundamentals summarizes company overview, profitability, growth, balance-sheet strength, cash-flow quality and valuation context. The financial quality view is sector-aware where sufficient standardized data is available.
Why can financial or earnings data sometimes be unavailable?
Some upstream providers impose quotas or temporary rate limits. Nolad uses available fallback sources where supported, but certain fields can remain unavailable until the provider resumes service.
What do the Macro Radar colors mean?
Green = Low, Yellow = Moderate, Orange = High and Red = Critical event risk. The colors measure potential market impact, not bullish or bearish direction.

Saved Analyses

What exactly is saved in a Saved Analysis?
A Saved Analysis is a time-stamped snapshot of the selected contract and the relevant Nolad setup/market context. It is intended to preserve what you were looking at when the analysis was saved.
What does Compare to Current mean?
It compares the saved snapshot with current market conditions for the same underlying/contract context. This can include underlying movement, current option value and hypothetical P / L based on the saved entry price and quantity.
Can I filter Saved Analyses by date?
Yes. Use the From and To date filters in Saved Analyses to review snapshots from a specific period.
What happens when I file a Saved Analysis as a trade?
The trade form uses the values captured when the analysis was saved rather than replacing them with today's underlying or premium. You can still edit the actual trade fill before saving. Once filed, the saved analysis is removed from the Saved Analyses list.

Trades

What does the Trade Ledger track?
The ledger tracks open and closed positions, entry information, current market value, invested amount, realized/unrealized P / L, ROI, days to expiration, status and trade-management actions.
How is live P / L calculated for an open option?
Open positions are marked using the live bid/ask midpoint when both are available, with a bid or ask fallback if only one side is available. Commissions recorded in the trade are included in the trade math.
Can I close a position in multiple transactions?
Yes. A trade can be closed in multiple partial transactions. For example, you can buy 10 contracts, sell 5 at one price, 3 later at another price and mark the final 2 as expired.
How do I close an open trade?
Open the trade with Manage / Close, then use the highlighted Close Position control in the Closing Transactions section. Add one or more closing transactions and save the trade.
What happens if I delete a trade by mistake?
Nolad provides an Undo Delete control so the most recently deleted trade can be restored during the current session.
What does Starting Capital affect?
Starting Capital is used for account-level ROI calculations. Trade-level P / L and ROI are still calculated from the actual capital invested in each position.

Nolad AI, Watchlist and Journal

What can Nolad AI answer?
Nolad AI reads the current Nolad workstation context and can explain the selected setup, visible scores, contract comparisons, option-chain diagnostics, chart context, earnings and macro risk in plain language for educational research. It does not provide investment advice, recommendations, trade instructions, position sizing or personalized financial guidance.
Does Nolad AI change the scores?
No. The analytical engines calculate the Setup Score and Contract Score. Nolad AI explains the results and context; it does not rewrite the underlying scoring methodology and does not turn those results into a recommendation or trading instruction.
What is the Watchlist for?
The Watchlist keeps frequently monitored symbols easy to access across the workspace. Scanner can also use the configured liquid/watchlist universe when looking for opportunities.
What is Journal used for?
Journal is the review workspace for recording and revisiting trading observations and decisions alongside the analytical tools.

Data and calculations

Where does Nolad get market and financial data?
Nolad uses multiple connected data providers for quotes, options chains, charts, news, earnings, macroeconomic releases and standardized financial information. Fallback sources are used for selected datasets when available.
Are Nolad's scoring weights public?
No. Nolad displays the scores, inputs and diagnostics needed to understand a result, while the internal scoring weights and proprietary formula remain private.
Why can a displayed value differ from my broker?
Quotes can update at different times across providers and brokers, and spreads can change quickly. Displayed values are informational and may differ from values shown by other data sources.

Mobile workspace

Is the mobile site the same as desktop?
It uses the same core Nolad analysis but presents it in a mobile-first layout with persistent top ticker access, bottom navigation, horizontal summary cards and mobile drawers/modals.
How do I move between Terminal, Edge, Scanner, Markets and Trades?
Use the persistent bottom navigation. Opening another main workspace automatically closes supported overlay panels so navigation remains direct.
Where are Saved Analyses, Watchlist, account controls and Nolad AI on mobile?
Open the hamburger menu in the top header for quick actions and account controls. Major workspace functions also remain accessible through the bottom navigation and page-level actions.
